Panel Discussions- Showcasing Your Expertise and Leaping Ahead of Your Peers

Invited to be in a panel discussion? This is an amazing opportunity to shine and build credibility in your field of expertise. So, what do you need to do to make sure you are well-prepared and you don’t let this opportunity go to waste?
As an HR expert I’ve been invited on several panels in the past to discuss relevant topics on HR in the GCC region. Here are some of my tips for you if ever you get invited to be on a panel.

Connect with the moderator:
The moderator who runs your panel is the first person you need to be in touch with once get selected to be on the panel. Speak to the organizer of the event and you can be put in touch with him/her. Typically, the moderator has a pre-panel call or meeting so the panelists can know and meet each other. If this is not the case, make sure you contact the moderator and understand the following:
• Panel format
• Names of other panelists
• Duration
• Objective of the discussion
• Any specific idea you need to share
• Any specific role you need to play etc
• The ground rules

Do the prep and then you’re all set
You want to put your best foot forward and be impressive when you are on stage with other experts. The most effective way of doing this is to do your preparation well in advance. This way you turn up confident and competent.

• Prepare for the panel discussion topic by reading up about it, researching relevant statistics, facts, new ideas, emerging trends, new opportunities. Watch videos, listen to podcasts and read at least a week before your event starts.
• Read up about the main event as well. What is the theme and goals of this event? Who is the audience? What do they expect? As a panelist you want to ‘wow’ the audience, so you need to know what the crowd will be like so you can tailor your message accordingly.
• Research your fellow panelists- who are they? What makes them special? What are their views on the panel topic? What questions could they ask you? What would you like to ask them?

Be confident and charismatic
People are looking to be inspired. So, give them what they’ve paid for. Be warm, confident, smiling and energetic. Even if you are discussing something serious you can still infuse your words with enthusiasm and energy so the audience and your peers find you memorable.

• State your views strongly.
• Share your messages in a catchy manner.
• Always keep an eye on the audience so you don’t lose their interest.
• Never talk for more than 2 minutes.
• Disagree or oppose gracefully and diplomatically.

Never go into a panel discussion with little preparation or not knowing who you will be up against. Even if you have been given only a few hours to prepare, make sure you do it well.
